Appeal for donations

5th December 2011

Dear friend

This year CARAD was contacted Alib's school which was concerned that he was really struggling and not enjoying school. As Alib came from a refugee background, English was his second language and the teachers were worried he was falling behind in his education.

CARAD found a great male tutor, Dave, who started to visit Alib at home once a week, to go through the lessons, and to provide him with the confidence that he needed to begin to succeed. Dave provided lots of opportunities to practice speaking and listening to English, and Alib's confidence grew so that he started to interact in class. Dave started to take Alib to the park for a bit of footy as a reward for doing well at the lessons.

The teachers are really pleased with Alib's progress –he is now participating more in class activities and his grades have improved. I would like to invite you to help children help Alib so that they can have the same opportunities as other children.

I want to wish all our friends and supporters a very peaceful Christmas and a happy new year.

Without your support during 2011, we wouldn’t have been able to assist Alib or achieve the following amazing results:

  • 240 clients supported by volunteers and staff, who are being taught English, assisted with settlement needs, helped with homework or had their sense of social isolation reduced.
  • Financial assistance to 52 families.
  • Housing assistance to 20 people per month.
  • Started a new Regional Case Manager service to Christmas Island and Curtin detainees.

I would like to personally thank you for your help, and ask that you to consider making a special donation to CARAD so that we can continue this vital work in 2012.

CARAD provides vitally important services to refugees and asylum seekers.

I believe that CARAD's work is so important that I am asking you to please help us to do more. We urgently need donations to continue to make a difference in the lives of the most vulnerable in society:

  •  $25 buys a phone card for a person in detention
  • $50 buys a volunteer a resource to help them teach English as a second language
  • $80 buys a food voucher for a client in difficulty
  • $150 buys an asylum seeker who is living in the community, food, utilities and transport for one week
  • $3000 sends our Regional Case Manager to Christmas Island for one week

All donations $2 and over are tax deductible, a receipt will be sent to you.

Thank you once again for your continued support.
